Download
the Intel RST Driver (typically SetupRST.exe ) from your laptop manufacturer’s support site (e.g., Dell , HP , or Acer ). Extract the files : F6flpy-x64 -intel-R- Vmd-.zip 12th Gen
- Clean installing Windows 10 or 11 on a 12th Gen system with VMD enabled in BIOS.
- Deploying Windows via imaging tools (DISM, SCCM) that lack native VMD support.
- Installing Windows on an Intel RST RAID volume created on a 12th Gen system.
On 12th Gen platforms, VMD is often enabled by default in the UEFI BIOS. When enabled, the operating system sees the storage devices through the VMD controller, not directly as standard NVMe or SATA controllers. Therefore, a specific driver is required. Clean installing Windows 10 or 11 on a
- Cause: The driver was loaded only for installation, but Windows bootloader does not have the VMD driver in its boot-start drivers list.
- Fix: After installation, boot into Safe Mode (spam F8 or use Windows Recovery). Once in Safe Mode, Windows will automatically load basic storage drivers. Then, install the full Intel RST driver package from within Windows (not just the F6 floppy driver).
