Xenogears — GameShark codes write-up
- The Rule of One: Never enable more than five codes simultaneously. Memory conflicts are real.
- The Save State Principle: On an emulator, make a save state before activating codes. On a real PS1, save to Slot 2 and cheat on Slot 1.
- Avoid "Max Stats on Level Up": Unlike modern RPGs, Xenogears calculates stats via a complex growth matrix. Forcing max stats often results in "negative overflow" (your level 99 character has 1 HP).
- The Tower of Babel Exception: This is the only location where the "Walk Through Walls" code is considered morally acceptable by the community. The jumping physics are broken. Use the code there without shame.
Perhaps the most fascinating use of the Gameshark for Xenogears wasn't about making the game easier, but about exploring what could have been.
