Why Preserve the Digital Old Growth?
- Non-intervention: Preservation without “improvement.” No compression, no reformatting, no algorithmic recommendation layers. What was broken stays broken if originally broken.
- Stratigraphic depth: Just as old-growth forests have soil layers representing centuries of organic accumulation, the archive preserves network layers — from TCP/IP handshakes to IRC logs to rendered page states — in parallel.
- Rewilding digital space: Allowing archived communities to remain “feral” — including dead links, broken images, flame wars, orphaned pages, and abandoned guestbooks. These are not errors but ecological features.
An archive is not a guaranteed preservation. This digital wilderness faces logging and fire: virgin forest internet archive
