REM Discography: A Blogspot Exclusive
- Document (1987) — R.E.M. broke through commercially without abandoning integrity. “The One I Love” became a surprise hit—ambiguous lyrics masking darker intent—while the album’s pacing and hooks hinted at stadium potential. Standouts: “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).”
- Green (1988) — Their first on a major label; Green mixes political commentary with pop motifs and a bigger, more colorful production palette. It showed the band could scale up and still sound like themselves. Standouts: “Orange Crush,” “Stand.”
- Out of Time (1991) — A seismic shift: orchestral touches, acoustic textures, and mainstream domination. “Losing My Religion” became a worldwide phenomenon and introduced R.E.M. to a whole new audience. Mike Mills’ melodic bass and vocal harmonies flourish. Standouts: “Losing My Religion,” “Shiny Happy People.”
