pfSense 2.5.1 — Download ISO (guide)
Open a browser on a computer connected to the LAN port and go to that IP. Default Username: Default Password: A quick heads-up:
- Accept the defaults (Boot Multi User).
- Assign Interfaces: This is the most critical step. You must know which NIC is your WAN (Internet) and which is your LAN (Internal network). If unsure, let the kernel autodetect or use the
autooption. - Installation Type: Choose "Quick/Easy Install" (Entire Disk) unless you have advanced partitioning needs.
- Filesystem: Select UFS (Unified File System) . ZFS is available but introduces memory overhead that defeats the purpose of using 2.5.1 on legacy hardware.
- Reboot: Once the "Installation Complete" message appears, remove the installation media and reboot.
- Burn to USB (Do not use CD/DVD): Use Rufus (Windows) or
dd(Linux/Mac). Note: Rufus must be in "DD Image" mode for pfSense ISOs, not ISO mode. - BIOS Settings: Set your NICs to UEFI or Legacy BIOS (2.5.1 supports both, but UEFI is modern). Disable "Quiet Boot" to see errors.
- Boot: Insert the USB and boot.
- Accept: Accept the default boot options (Boot Multi User).
- Install: Select "Install" (Ignore "Recover" and "Shell").
System > Advanced, disable ICMP Redirects and WebGUI redirect rule.- FreeBSD-SA-22:04.vt (Terminal escape)
