Haider is a 2014 Indian crime drama film written, produced, and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. It is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet and an adaptation of Basharat Peer's memoir Curfewed Night, set amidst the insurgencies of 1995 in Kashmir. The film stars Shahid Kapoor in the title role, alongside Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Shraddha Kapoor, and Irrfan Khan.
Consistent with Bhardwaj’s previous works ( Maqbool and Omkara ), Haider avoids black-and-white moralizing. The characters are "infected with a gray hue," reflecting the ambiguity of the conflict itself. Ghazala, the Gertrude figure, is portrayed with a haunting complexity by Tabu—caught between her survival instincts, her love for her son, and her own desires. Her relationship with Haider is layered with Oedipal undertones, making their confrontation one of the most emotionally charged sequences in modern Indian cinema.
