The Interpreter of Desires (Tarjumān al-Ashwāq)
- The PDF Challenge: A full English translation of the entire Futuhat is almost impossible to find because it hasn't been completed commercially. However, selections and summaries are widely available. The most famous summary is The Meccan Revelations (translated by William Chittick).
- Search tip: For this work, search for "Ibn Arabi Futuhat selections PDF" instead of the full text.
- Read the Introduction First: Most English PDFs include a long introduction by the translator (e.g., Austin or Chittick). Read it twice. It explains the terminology.
- Keep a Glossary: Keep a second tab open for terms: Haqq (Truth/God), Khalq (Creation), Qalb (Heart), Hayal (Imagination).
- Read Aloud: Ibn Arabi wrote for oral recitation. Reading his complex sentences aloud helps the rhythm sink into your mind.
- Expect Contradiction: He famously wrote "My heart has become capable of every form" (from Tarjuman). He embraces paradox. Do not try to force his system into Aristotelian logic.
