Character Introductions: The Broken and the Brutal
- "Big" John Cannon (Leif Erickson): Introduced as a stubborn, iron-willed patriarch. He is not a gunslinger but a businessman and a rancher. Episode 1 highlights his ruthlessness in business but also his deep love for his first wife, making his quick remarriage for survival a poignant conflict.
- Billy Blue Cannon (Mark Slade): Introduced as the "Prince" who is not quite ready to be King. He is educated (having attended a university back East) and hot-headed. The death of his mother in this episode is the defining trauma of his character arc for the series.
- Annalee Cannon (Joan Caulfield): Though her screen time is short, her death is the inciting incident of the entire series. She represents the gentility that the wilderness destroys.
- Victoria Montoya (Linda Cristal): Introduced in the closing moments. Her acceptance of the arranged marriage to save her family's standing introduces her as a woman of duty and strength.
- Manolito Montoya (Henry Darrow): Though briefly seen in relation to his father, his character is set up as the carefree, somewhat roguish brother-in-law who will become a key figure.
