Essay: Blue Streak (1999) — A Fast, Funny Heist Film
Movie Overview:
(Lawrence), a professional jewel thief who successfully steals a $17 million diamond, only to be double-crossed by his partner, Deacon. Before being arrested, Miles stashes the diamond in the ventilation duct of a building under construction. Two years later, he is released from prison and discovers that the building is now a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) headquarters.
- The Grain is Preserved: Unlike cheap upscales that scrub away all texture, a proper 720p Bluray rip keeps the filmic grain. The Los Angeles rooftops look sharp, but not artificially so.
- The Action Scenes: The heist sequences and the famous "construction site" finale have a lot of dark shadows. On a 480p DVD, it’s a black blob. On the 720p Bluray, you can actually see the choreography.
- The Aspect Ratio: You get the proper widescreen (2.35:1). No more pan-and-scan where you only see Martin’s left shoulder.
